University of Connecticut (UConn) is one of 12 institutions nationwide selected to receive the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation’s 2016 Beckman Scholars Program Award to support outstanding undergraduate researchers in biology and chemistry. Our goal is to identify and nurture our most motivated and talented UConn undergraduate students, majoring in biology or a related field.
Up to three students will be named as 2019-2020 Beckman Scholars. Beckman Scholars will pursue their independent research project under the auspices of an approved full-time faculty Mentor. Each Beckman Scholar will receive support to carry out research during one academic year (2019-2020) and two summers (ten weeks each in the summers of 2019 and 2020):
- First Summer – $6,800
- Academic Year – $4,600
- Second Summer – $6,800
Each Beckman Scholar may apply for additional fund up to $2,800 for laboratory supplies and travel that support current research activities. In addition, each Beckman Scholar may be invited to attend the annual Beckman Symposium in each of the two summers of their award term. The 2019 Beckman Symposium: TBA.
- A GPA of 3.5 or greater
- Prior research experience through a research intensive course or an independent research experience in a laboratory setting
- Exhibit distinguishing characteristics such as academic commitment, personal integrity, and contribution to the Community
- US citizens or permanent residents
